A Look Back on National Nutrition Month

As you look back on our accounts, we have been exploring the different messages of National Nutrition Month during March. This year’s theme was “Fuel for the Future” from the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Each week, we broke down a different message of this theme and ways we carry it out in our day-to-day lives.

Week 1: Eating with the Environment in Mind

We’re trying out protein power bowls! This meal option is a great way to mix and match add-ins based on your preferences and what you have available.

Anatomy of a power bowl: base + protein + grains + vegetables

Protein power bowls are also a great way to engage in our message this week of eating with the environment in mind! By trying out different proteins, we can opt for a plant-based option at times. Try out chickpeas for a Mediterranean bowl, black beans for a burrito bowl, fried tofu for a crispy teriyaki bowl, lentils for a coconut curry bowl, and so many more! Even add a drizzle of your favorite sauce or dressing for a flavor kick!

Week 2: Seeing an RD for Individualized Nutrition Advice

See 3 important ways of how a dietitian can be helpful for you as an individual:

  1. Individualized Care! A Registered Dietitian can provide you with personalized guidance. Receiving tailored care and advice from an educated dietitian ensures your needs are being met and your lifestyle is being considered.

  2. Expertise! Dietitians are nutrition experts and can pass along a wealth of knowledge to you. As an expert, dietitians know the best, most relevant information to share, so as to not overwhelm their clients with “filler” content. Many dietitians also specialize in specific aspects of nutrition (like diabetes or eating disorders). This makes finding a dietitian who fits your specific needs that much easier!

  3. Team Approach! As dietitian at Eat Well with Gina, we work WITH you to help guide you on your journey towards becoming a more balanced you. We work with you, wherever you are, to achieve your goals, which ultimately leads to long-lasting success!

Week 3: Budget Friendly Nutrition Tips

We love to create meals that are not only nourishing but also saving us money as well!

Some simple ways to save money on meals include..

  • Planning ahead to reduce food waste

  • Checking what you already have at home in the back of your pantry or freezer

  • Following sales and using coupons

  • Learning about community resources like SNAP, local food banks, and budget-friendly recipes

Week 4: Eating a Variety of Foods for Sustainable Nutrition

Here are 3 ways you can start to include more variety in your life not only to improve your relationship with food but also to break free of the limitations of the dieting world!

  1. Debunk and challenge toxic diet culture messages – check out some of our previous posts on this!

  2. Include your favorite cultural and traditional foods in your meals – food is meant to be enjoyed and to be a helping hand in creating meaningful experiences!

  3. Honor your body by listening to its needs and wants – if you are craving a cookie, the best thing you can do for your body is to honor it by allowing yourself to have that cookie!

As we wrap up our celebration of National Nutrition Month, it’s important to think about the way we can continue to prioritize these messages in the coming months as well!

What are a few ways you can take these messages with you on your journey with nutrition?
